Happy Hours

Bars & Cafes

Happy Hours in Hoi An are everywhere, from the Old Town to An Hoi Islet and beyond. Depending upon the establishment, booze prices can veer from shockingly cheap to on-par with what you might pay at home. However, keeping an eye out for the happy hours can enable even the thriftiest backpacker to partake in a drink at one of Hoi An’s more upmarket establishments.

Around the Old Town you’ll find happy hours in most of the leading restaurants and there’s no harm in taking a quick livener after an afternoon’s shopping, on your way to eating somewhere less expensive. Party animals will love a stroll round An Hoi where drinkeries and late night bars with happy hours abound. Beachside, Hoi An’s happy hour scene is at its most plentiful at An Bang Beach.

It’s worth bearing in mind that not all the liquor sold in the city is the genuine article. Cheap, grain-based alcohol may be passed off as a brand-name spirits in some places, and it’s not always so easy to tell amongst all that fizz and fruit juice. The difference is usually noticed in the rank of hangover.

In fact we experienced the ‘hangover test’ first-hand as we searched high and low for those places that serve the real deal, much to the detriment of our livers and the odd pounding head along the way. The result: our recommended happy hours in Hoi An below.

Hoi An Old Town (or near)

Ask locals where the best place in Hoi An is for cocktails and the answer is often ‘Mango Mango’.  And there is no denying celebrity chef Duc Tran’s cocktails are pretty darn good and his Happy Hour prices superb value. You’ll find none of the sub-standard spirits frequently used in this part of town at Mango Mango. The spirits are top shelf and the cocktails come laden with fresh fruit and juice with no compromise on quality. Lounge bar/restaurant, Mango Mango, has several beautiful settings in which to enjoy Happy Hour. The lovely upstairs, wrap-around balcony and downstairs inside the boast festive, orange tables and Carribbean-syle paintings and drawings. But there is no finer feeling than sipping a perfectly mixed Frozen Margarita – at a Happy Hour price – with a small complimentary bowl of snacks at the sun sets over the Thu Bon River and Hoi An Old Town from Mango Mango’s front veranda. Ah, bliss!

Overlooking the Thu Bon River, Market Bar hosts an intimate setting in an impeccable location. Recommended for locals and travelers of all tastes, especially those searching for somewhere ‘chic-er’, quirkier and more laid back than your average tourist-struck bar in Hoi An. The menu offers a thoughtfully-curated list of drinks including craft beers and cocktails, as well as a mouth-watering choice of food platters (cheese, vegetarian, charcuterie, and mixed). The bar houses a superb selection of wine, ranging from affordable to decadent – red, white, rosé and sparkling, both local and international. For those partial to gin the Market Bar will put a smile on your face.  On sale are eight delicious varieties of gin and tonic infusions.  They come in goldfish bowl sized glasses with names like Basil and Blue Pea Flower, Chipotle and Lime and A Hint of Negroni.

Happy Hours: 4pm – 6pm (all gin and tonic infusions 50,000 VND / 2.20 USD)

Corner of Bach Dang & Hoang Dieu Streets, Hoi An
3pm – 11pm

The deals and Happy Hours are the same across all of Duc Tran’s venues, as is the cocktail menu. If you decide to try Mai Fish for cocktails we recommend you hit the garden area. This is a wonderful oasis where you can get lost in your thoughts, but as the expertly mixed pre-dinner drinks go down a treat, don’t get too lost or it might all get away from you! Their Frozen Margaritas are to die for.

The funky and colourful Mango Rooms is yet one more fabulous venue for cocktails owned by celebrated chef, Duc Tran.  If  you’re feeling adventurous, steer away from the standard list and sample one of Duc’s incredible fusion cocktails. The sour and sweet combinations are sure to get your taste buds swirling.  At Mango Rooms, we recommend sitting outside (or near the window) for a wonderful view of the Thu Bon River.

Proudly the first dedicated sports bar in Hoi An – with an unashamed Australasian bias – 3 Dragons Sports Bar is one of the best places in Hoi An to watch sport.  With icy cold beer and gourmet burgers it’s a home away from home for many expats and, takes the prize when it comes to atmosphere for the big events as it has one of the most comfortable and diverse viewing facilities. But this wonderful venue has another side.  Out the back, away from the hurly burly you’ll find their Riverside Restaurant, a picturesque, al fresco setting overlooking the water.  It’s a perfect place to enjoy some Happy Hour cocktails over a meal with friends while you watch river life on the Thu Bon.  Apart from stocking all the standard cocktails, 3 Dragons Sports Bar also hosts a Tuesday movie night and trivia on Wednesdays (check their Facebook for details of the movie).

Happy Hours: 5pm – 10pm (Fridays), cocktails 50,000 VND (2.18 USD) and Free Nibbles 5pm – 7pm.  On other nights all spirits 50,000 VND & cocktails 70,000 VND (2.18 – 3 USD)

The Deck Hoi An

Temporarily Closed, please check their Facebook page.

The Deck is a pool bar atop Hotel Royal Hoi An that offers the highest public vantage point in the city. It’s a knockout with panoramas on three sides. The majestic Thu Bon River is the centerpiece in the foreground and the blue mountains that mark the highlands inland to the north, south and west towards the Laos divide, distinctively define the horizon.  This bar is not to be missed. Contemporary house or funk creates a party atmosphere and a visit at happy hour makes the million dollar view affordable. And, if you kick on the doors don’t close till midnight.

The Hill Station Hoi An

This franchise kicked off in Sapa and then spread to Hanoi and Hoi An. It’s a deli ostensibly in tribute to  French Hill Station cuisine that developed in remote parts of Vietnam during the colonial period. In Hoi An it has also become a place to hang in the afternoon and evening – just as the original Hill Stationers did 100 or so years ago – with wine, cheese and cold cuts. The wine list is extensive, including Happy Hour options by the glass. There are craft beers as well and popular homemade concoctions including the intriguing green chili infused riced wine. Hill Station‘s setting is magnificent in a beautiful old Hoi An shophouse. Highly recommended for lovers of good wine.

Happy Hours: 2pm – 6pm, 2 for 1 craft beer and wine by the glass

Bazar Cafe and Restaurant

Temporarily Closed, please check their Facebook page.

Bazar Café & Restaurant is one of the prettiest venues in Hoi An featuring unique artifacts from around the world. Sit overlooking busy Tran Phu Street or find a cosy nook inside the spacious back area or revel in the beauty of the tiered garden/courtyard, this is one great place to enjoy a cocktail – or four.  While many of their cocktails are delicious, the Hot Asian (vodka, lemongrass, Vietnamese basil and lemon) is amazing! Its refreshing tang followed by ‘just’ a hint of sugar really hits the mark.  And if you’re in the mood for some shisha with your Hot Asian or Tequila Sunrise, this is  your place.

Before and Now

Temporarily Closed, please check their Facebook page.

The ever-popular Before and Now Bar and Restaurant is a lively venue suitable for all ages. A favorite of backpackers it really hits its stride later in the evening. If you want some quiet, head upstairs to the restaurant, otherwise soak up the indie/rock while shooting some pool and mingle. At cocktail hour nab a seat near the entrance to busy Le Loi Street, the arterial thoroughfare that bisects Hoi An Old Town for  some voyeuristic entertainment.  The cocktail list is comprehensive but if you’re looking to kick start your evening try their Margarita, it really packs a punch.

Green Mango has a comfortable moody vibe where you can sit and watch the world go by in a grand, 100-year-old, traditional Hoi An long house. With tasty complimentary peanuts one may be tempted to relax for all seven of its happy hours. Top shelf single malts and boutique beers also available. We stuck with the classics and thoroughly enjoyed the Cosmopolitan. Nibble on some of their delicious entrees for the perfect cocktail experience.

The traditional, airy merchant-house architecture provides a typical Old Town setting in which to sit back and relax. And, if you’re in a small group, the compact but charming garden provides a pleasant escape from the busy streets of Old Town. If you find regular margaritas a bit too sour, try their Blue Margarita, it’s a little sweeter and very pretty to look at. And, if you stay for dinner, the fine menu traverses Japanese, European, Vietnamese and International cuisines.

Bungalow Beach Bar

Oh, happy are the Happy Hours at the fabulous Bungalow Beach Bar (well, the ones we remember!)  This  expansive venue with its cruisy, friendly vibe and 23 craft beers on tap is one of An Bang’s happening places. With something on most nights, it’s not hard to see why. There’s Saturday Open Mic for budding musicians, Tuesday Taco specials, Thursday Quiz Night and Friday Chicken Wing Specials (visit just for these alone!). And if you’re handy with a cue or fancy spearing the dartboard, the upbeat Bungalow Beach Bar has you covered. Completing its chameleonized week, Family Fun Day Sunday shifts focus to the picturesque swimming pool out the back, allowing mums and dads to get stuck into a few at Happy Hour while their happy  nippers splash, safely, in the pool.

Double Cat Bar

This cruisy, sultry-lit, late night venue with blues music on Friday nights – and impromptu music on others – is a local favorite. It is also lauded on Trip Advisor and by bloggers. Why? Well, the hosts do make you very welcome indeed, that’s a big part of it. But there’s much more to Double Cat Bar. Outside the setting has a tropical twist with bamboo finishes set off by copious plants whilst inside there’s a chilled, New York lounge vibe. The cocktails too, are heavenly – try the Bloody Mary, the Espresso Martini or the Mojitos. The light menu is just right if you need to take the edge off as well. Look out for the rotating cat hologram on the path outside and patrons spilling out onto the street. Great toilets too. Highly recommended.

Soul Kitchen

Whatever you do, make sure you make Soul Kitchen one of your ‘Must Do’ places during your visit to Hoi An.  Iconic amongst Hoi An Expats, it is a perfect place to enjoy Happy Hour.  Why?  Because Soul Kitchen has everything you could want from a beach bar: comfortable and clean sun beds, a grassy terrace under the shady palms, live music in the evenings and a welcoming atmosphere for the entire family. Order off the menu or have a pizza from nearby Luna d’autunno delivered to your table. There is a great array of musical talent – Wednesday to Sunday. Indeed it’s fair to say that Soul Kitchen is Hoi An’s leading live music venue in diversity and quality. Be sure to check the Hoi An Now events calendar for their program.

An Bang Beach
8am – 11pm

This spacious, tasteful venue, with an ambiance of casual luxury has something for everyone. For the pub loving, footie crowd there’s the sports bar. Offering beer on tap, sport on TV and stools at the bar, this is a truly authentic pub experience.  For those seeking to unwind over good food and spectacular beach views, head out the back to the restaurant/beer garden.  Alternatively keep going and hit the water for a dip in the sea. You’ll find plenty of shaded seating to set up camp. Owned by an Aussie and his Vietnamese wife, Salt Pub is a fabulous venue that will appeal to all demographics. And there’s always something on from Sunday roasts and special events to live music. For the best Happy Hour experience, choose one of their tables overlooking the water and let the sound of the rolling waves soothe your soul.  Food is a combination of Western and Vietnamese and the drinks menu is comprehensive. Their Bloody Marys are particularly good, in fact they are bloody great!

Kahunas Hoi An Beach Club

Kahunas is open but with few backpackers in town, check their FB for special events

If you could say one venue had it all, it would be Kahunas. With brilliant blue central pool, ample seating in wide leafy expansive grounds that stretch all the way to a private, pristine beach and tasteful rustic outdoor seating, Kahunas is visually breathtaking. Their food and cocktails are pretty good too. We highly recommend their Eggs Benedict breakfast followed by a spicy Bloody Mary. While the morning vibe at Kahunas is as chilled as the piped music they play, this swiftly changes around 1pm. Party going backpackers begin to descend and around 3pm the party starts.  Music is cranked up, free shots start firing from the very accommodating bar staff and the mood turns infectiously merry. Kahunas is undoubtedly one of the best party places in town.  Try their Mai Tai Long Island Tea and start dancing! Cheers!

Kukun Hoi An

Kukun Hoi An describes itself as a Dance Nightclub / restaurant / pub. Right on the beach at An Bang it is a chilled hideaway by day and a DJ-driven party venue by night. The decor is quirky in places and there are odd nooks and crannies towards the back. There’s a great vibe here and the lantern-lit terraced layout is perfect to soak up the ocean views while you sip on Happy Hour specials. There are very few late-night venues in Hoi An and Kukun leads the way at An Bang Beach. In true party spirit, Kukun hosts a variety of impromptu events from Happy Hour specials to theme evenings.  So, whether it’s a bonfire on the beach or a techno beach party, open mic or dance classes, you can be sure to have one of the best party nights in Hoi An. Keep up to date through Hoi An Now’s What’s On Calendar or their FB page.

Roving Chillhouse

Situated in the heart of Hoi An’s rice fields, the Roving Chill House is fast becoming one of Hoi An’s sought out meeting places. With its cluster of wooden huts, rustic décor, inside/outside seating and marvelous rural vista this little haven exudes a Zen-like calm that stays with you hours after you leave.  Whilst it’s beautiful at any time of the day we particularly recommend visiting at sunrise (there’s yoga classes if you’re inclined). Alternatively, drop in for their Happy Hour at sunset.  Twilight descending over the rice fields is a magical image you will never forget.  As Happy Hour venues go, this is a one of Hoi An’s finest.  The Roving Chill House serve coffee, food and drinks.  There’s plenty of seating for all types from bar stools, comfy lounge chairs to daybeds.  Ommm!

Sessions Bar Hoi An

Off Hai Ba Trung under the An Bang Bridge lies one of Hoi An’s little treasures. Sessions Bar & Restaurant is keenly priced, has a killer setting and the bar staff offer that home away from home warmth, fun and family friendship that will see you going back time and time again. Right on the river, the pontoon platform seating at sunset is an incredible setting for a sundowner or two. This is a great place to come if you are a solo traveler.  The owners are fun loving party crew and there’s often a jam or special night on so check Hoi An Now’s What’s On Calendar or their Facebook page.  And, as the guys would say, ‘Stay Boozed’ and see you there!

Voi’s Kitchen & Bar

For a great Happy Hour experience you can’t go past Voi’s Kitchen & Bar. Run by the contagiously smiling, Mukhlishin and his wonderfully friendly staff, Voi’s is a favourite haunt of many Hoi An expats. Set in a tropical garden where toilet signs tell male patrons to ‘Go Left Because Women are Always Right’, Voi’s has that special quality that makes you feel ‘at home’ – a dangerous feeling to have when the cocktail range is huge and the prices ridiculously cheap.  The seating too offers a range of options. Settle in to their big comfy sofas or ‘bar it’ on stools under the night sky. Alternatively, if you’re there simply to eat, take up one of their long tables and benches towards the back.  We recommend their delicious chicken wings washed down by a couple of Singapore Slings. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, Voi’s has you covered too.
