Exploring The Mid – Autumn Festival in Vietnam

The Hungry Ghosts Festival and the 7th Lunar Month
At the beginning of the 7th lunar month I lost my ATM card and my office manager said, “that’s normal’. She quickly added: ‘you’ll be lucky if that’s all that happens to you.’ She herself had just had her helmet stolen and was resigned to it. ‘I need to be much more careful this month – the hungry ghosts, the forlorn ones with no family, the sinners are all around,’ she added as she pulled a visitor’s bike inside the gate for safe-keeping and checked the lock on the side door.

Red Bridge Evening Cooking Class
As somewhat of a foodie and a cooking enthusiast, I was a little wary of signing up for a cooking class in Hoi An. I mean, there are just so many on offer – and I wanted to choose one that would allow me to actually cook instead of just sitting there like a spare turnip.

Paradise Cave in Vietnam
It could be a scene straight out of a Jules Verne novel. Gigantic stalactites, lit up in fantastical green and bluish hues, mushroom out from a slippery, dripping canopy. The natural detail of each limestone formation is extraordinarily surreal; similar to a 3D sci-fi flick, causing you to think for a moment you’re on the set of ‘Forbidden Planet’ or are, in fact, journeying to the center of the earth.
Thai Phien Street in Hoi An
Think you are finished with the ancient town? Head away and a short walk of just a couple of blocks brings you to Thai Phien. This is a real picture, not of ancient but of traditional Hoi An. The block between Nguyen Truong To and Tran Cao Van is the most fascinating. Thai Phien is on the maps and you can’t miss it because the Nguyen Truong To intersection has the Travelodge on one corner and a large church is on the other.

So there you are, stranded under some old town shop front awning, wondering whether the downpour is ever going to cease. It’s Hoi An’s Rainy Season. This quick guide to Tet in Hoi An is for for those who haven’t been before. But before jumping into the tips and advice let’s set the scene a little.
What’s Open at Tet (Vietnamese New Year) 2018
What’s open at Tet? At Tet (Vietnamese New Year) there’s not much rhyme nor reason regarding who stays open and who closes. This quick guide to what’s open and what’s closed over Tet in 2018 covers the basics. It’s by no means exhaustive but it’s a good start. All dates indicated are February 2018.
Tet Food Delicacies
You might have heard of the special Tet food that Vietnamese prepare to eat and offer to guests during the Tet holidays: Banh Chung and Banh Day.
Vietnamese Zodiac: The Dark Side
Ever wonder why zodiacs all over the world only have good things to say about everyone? Even faults are seen as positives as everyday reality goes out the window. You have to wonder where all the misery, war and poverty in the world comes from when reading these ‘fairy tale’-like descriptions where everybody is smart, compassionate and talented. This is a good marketing ploy that sucks in readers but it’s not much use to anyone.

The Lunar Calendar and the Full Moon Lantern Festival
Although the moon takes 27.3 days to orbit the earth it takes 29.5 days to complete its phases (because the earth is moving too). This makes it a bit tricky to nail down exactly on which date a full moon occurs, even in the lunar calendar. To cope with this some lunar months are 29 days and some are 30 days. In the wash-up the full moon usually occurs on the 15th or 16th day of each lunar month but not always.
