HOI AN CYCLING
To go cycling in Hoi An most hotels offer free access to bicycles or at a nominal charge. Patrons of all ages, shapes and sizes embrace the opportunity to get themselves to the beach, explore along dirt ridge tracks between drowned paddy fields or wend through bountiful market gardens.
For amateur cyclists Hoi An is particularly blessed. It’s flat as a tack, small, and far less traffic-scary than many other Vietnamese hot spots.
Nevertheless, Vietnamese road practice is completely alien for many Westerners, especially the way vehicles enter the mainstream unexpectedly without indicating, careen along the ‘wrong’ side of the road, or drift in long diagonals instead of making precise, 90-degree turns. All in front of trucks, buses, SUVs and the like part like the Red Sea of Moses’ time in a cloud of dust and a cacophony of horn blasts.
But by joining larger expertly-guided groups that move en masse like schools of fish, you may find ‘safety in numbers’ bicycling in Hoi An and discover more back roads of greater interest. You may also unearth locals and culture in a more focused way than you could wandering alone.
My advice? Do both. Bicycling in Hoi An is a great way to explore or get from A to B, on your own or with friends, but structured tours also provide a stimulating opportunity to discover what Hoi An and its surrounds offer beneath the surface.
