Located far from the plethora of tailors and cloth shops in the Old Town, Thuy Ngoc Cloth Shop at 328 Cua Dai offers exceptional tailoring at an extremely reasonable price. Situated a stone’s throw from the buzzing Ba Le Market, Thuy Ngoc Cloth Shop is only a part of the larger 328 complex which houses a restaurant, homestay, and cooking classes. I have had many a meal at the adjacent 328 Restaurant, but during my second stint in Hoi An I finally mustered the courage to have a shirt tailored.
While other shops are often cramped and musty, the Thuy Ngoc Cloth Shop is unlike most places in the Old Town. Light fills the open space as breezes from the street ruffle the hanging chiffon gowns on display. Swatches of fabric hang in the back where customers can take their time touching and trying the many colors and textures they have to offer. If you are unsatisfied with their selection, they are more than happy to work with any fabric you bring them.
A family-run business, Thuy Ngoc Cloth Shop prides themselves on honest service at affordable prices. Their location far from the center removes them from the regular tailor hustle. I was extremely pleased with the quality of the tailoring that was done for me. I had one shirt made with fabric that I brought to them and two made from their own fabric — all executed perfectly. The very thoughtful and kind service was a relief in a local industry that has become generally cold and somewhat robotic.
While it is a hike from Old Town, the cost of the cab to 328 Cua Dai is worth the peace of mind you will have knowing that you are working with professionals who have your best interests at heart. If you want to alleviate tailor stress while you’re in Hoi An, consider visiting Thuy Ngoc Cloth Shop.
