Women’s Day in Vietnam

Hoi An Guide | Festivals in Vietnam

There are many festivals in Vietnam and while Tet Holiday is the big one, many others are celebrated. While most festivals have a spiritual element, the secular Women’s Day in Vietnam acknowledges the achievements of women and their contribution to Vietnamese society.

Vietnam celebrates Women’s Day twice a year. Most of us are familiar with International Women’s Day on March 8th, a worldwide day to celebrate and commemorate women’s fight for equality and advancement everywhere. But there is also another specially-designated Women’s Day in Vietnam on October 20th. Read our guide below.

What is Vietnamese Women’s Day?

Vietnamese women have been prominent contributors to Vietnam’s growth, identity and fight. Like the country itself, however, women have had to fight to assert their civil rights and freedom. Although Vietnamese women often have faced and continue to face gender inequality, they have consistently been on the front lines in Vietnam’s history. This day is a reminder of their significant contributions as they seek equal rights and treatment. But it also serves as a day to empower and appreciate Vietnamese women.

History

On October 20th, 1930, The Vietnam Women’s Union was officially formed as a collective against imperialism. Vietnamese women were a strong force during the war, as they were equally fierce in their bravery and sacrifice. But this collective endurance has continued into the present.

How is Vietnamese Women’s Day Celebrated?

Vietnamese society often takes this day to show appreciation for the women in their personal lives. Events or ceremonies take place across cities and women receive flowers and gifts from their partners and friends. But most importantly, it’s a day to celebrate and inspire young Vietnamese women by recognizing the economic and political achievements of women throughout history in addition to their traditional roles.
