HEALTH INSURANCE – for living in Vietnam


While general medical costs accessed through the Vietnamese system are relatively cheap, it is very important to take out health insurance because if a serious health issue ensues and you need evacuation you could be in a whole heap of medical-cost trouble.


BEWARE …Many hospitals require upfront payment before they will start treatment. Make sure you have adequate health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment.


If you are planning to ride a motorbike look carefully at the health insurance criteria for cover. Some providers will insist that you have a motorbike license from your own country as well as a motorbike license from Vietnam. In all cases, you will – at the very least – be required to have a Vietnamese license to qualify for cover in the event of a motorbike accident. This is very important as the motorbike accident rate is very, very, very high in Vietnam!

NOTE: Most expats use Bao Viet and Liberty.  Bao Viet is cheaper and flexible in terms of your needs.  Liberty will allow you to pay half yearly.  If you can afford nothing else, get Global Rescue.  At the very least it will get you home in the case of an emergency.  If you want a cheaper policy, think about raising your excess.
