Vietnamese language is a tricky one to master, but it’s a good idea to try. There’s no guarantee that you’ll be understood (accent is everything!), but you’re sure to get a smile for trying. Also, using a little bit of Vietnamese is one way to save yourself from getting charged higher prices.

Where is the toilet? Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu? nya vi sing uh doh
How much is it? Bao nhiêu? bow new (like cow)
That’s too expensive Đắt quá dat wah
Two beers please Hai bia hi bee-a

Tried it out? They don't understand?

That’s because Vietnamese is TONAL!  Those little squiggly things above and below the written words mean everything!  There are six tones so one word can mean six different things.
