BANH TRANG TRON $
Korean restaurant, Banh Trang Tron, is cheaper-than-chips and one of the best value-for-money options in Hoi An. Indeed, some of our mates now regret introducing Hoi An Now to this gem as they’d hoped we wouldn’t write about it. You don’t come for the ambience, but with most dishes around $1, no one’s complaining.
Recalling her own struggles as a student, owner, Ms Trang, kicked off Banh Trang Tron 5 years ago aiming to provide affordable, quality options for students and younger people. The happy side effect is that we Westerners have become welcome too.
It all takes place in the parlour of Ms Trang’s family home which is tucked away in a lane between Cua Dai and Nguyen Duy Hieu. Here most seating is on the floor and cable TV provides company. In the modest outdoor area, however, a few low tables with small stools have been provided for the long-legged.
Favourites include sushi; claypot with rice, carrot, cucumber, cabbage, pork mince and a fried egg on top drizzled with sesame seeds; and deep fried pork strips coated with sticky rice (served with chili and mayonaisse). The mango salad laced with chili is a standout.
Although the whiteboard menu is only in Vietnamese, Ms Trang will capably walk you through it.
