A DONG SILK $$$

Cooling mist sprays, wheelchair access, gloriously smiling and savvy sales girls, and a truly impressive selection of fabric, A Dong Silk has it going on – even the mannequins look tasteful! But it is in customer service where A Dong Silk – one of Hoi An’s most established tailors – reigns supreme.

“If you have the shoulders there it will be too tight around the chest for your body type,” Oanh (pronounced ‘One’), my personable sales assistant informed me. Oanh, who has worked at A Dong Silk for seven and a half years, has training in customer tastes, body shapes, and fabric types. Her customer service is impeccable, and her English is pretty good too.

While it’s not cheap, A Dong Silk breathes professionalism. The staff’s in-depth knowledge of patterns and fabric is truly impressive, and I guess they had me from the get-go when I saw wheelchair access, something you don’t see too often in Hoi An. Now that’s caring!

And if its fabric choice you are looking for, A Dong Silk’s expansive, airy showroom at 62 Tran Hung Dao Street is not only one of the largest tailor shops I’ve been into, it also has one of the biggest selections of fabric I’ve seen. In particular, their linen range with a multitude of colors and hues is divine.

Sadly, my clothes didn’t turn out that well. They were tailored well but the shirt was too tight, and the trousers were… wrong. I wondered what the tailor may have been copying but it wasn’t the original trousers I gave for the blue-print. However, without any fuss, and as testimony to the high level of customer service this shop offers, my shirt was altered the same day and my trousers were re-made using completely new material.

As I’ve said time and time again, all tailoring in Hoi An is hit and miss but not all shops give great customer service. These guys do.
