Homestay Accommodation

Where To Stay

Like the numbers of spas and tailors, homestays in Hoi An are plentiful, and you’ll see them everywhere you go. Homestays offer cheaper accommodation than many hotels and by staying with a local family you’ll have indispensable local knowledge whenever you need it! Find our guide to the best homestays in Hoi An below, from the Old Town to the beach and quieter spots in-between.

What is a Homestay?

If you’re new to Vietnam, you might not have come across the term ‘homestay’ before. ‘Homestays’ require a different license to hotels and traditionally included a stipulation that guests took part in local cultural activities with their host family.

Given that you’ll generally be staying with a family in a similar fashion to a western guesthouse, this may include eating local food together, taking part in crafts or undertaking a short local tour together. But it’s generally up to you. These days, homestays come in all shapes and sizes. Some will be family homes where you’ll pay for a room and share the rest of the space. Others will be much larger and come closer to resembling small hotels. Most homestays will have bicycles to rent, and the larger ones may also offer food or even have a separate entrance for guests.

Either way, staying at a homestay is a greater cultural experience than staying at a hotel. Even at the larger homestays, you’ll have a family nearby who will be delighted to welcome you into their home, and there are many homestay guests who have become friends for life!
