3 DRAGONS SPORTS BAR AND RESTAURANT $$$

Proudly the first sports-dedicated bar in Hoi An – with an unashamedly Australasian bias – 3 Dragons Sports Bar and Restaurant kicked off well and has continued to improve its services and facilities as its patronage increases. Now, with multiple screens and more space, you’ll be able to enjoy your game come hell or high water, with an ice-cold beer and a gourmet burger. A home-away-from-home for many expats, 3 Dragons is not the cheapest option in town, but it takes the prize when it comes to atmosphere for the big sporting events.

From a smallish front bar, akin to an English pub, the facility now stretches through a recently renovated central area of lounge cubicles. There’s a quiet, al fresco setting out the back by the river as well where you can get away from it all (especially if your team’s getting clobbered). If you don’t like sport, this oasis also supplies a handy, bucolic retreat from the growling, barracking, and interminable abuse of the referees – both on-screen and on-seat – inside. Owners Chung Nguyen and Simon Burns work overtime to look after you, and have a solid expat following. The 3 Dragons Sports Gastropub website is also a valuable resource that features local broadcast times for all the main games.

3 Dragons also runs a weekly Pub Quiz on Wednesday nights & a weekly Pool Competition on Thursday nights – both great opportunities to get out of the house and do something a bit different. On the Australia Day Weekend (26-27 January) it plays host to Triple J’s Hottest 100! The daily happy hours, when drinks are discounted, run from 4pm – 6pm, Sunday to Thursday, and 3pm – 4pm Friday to Saturday, and the deals include buy 1 get 1 free on draft beer (San Miguel) and cocktails.

If you like to watch the big games in a throng, 3 Dragons is the place to go, and at other times its efficient management of multiple screens ensures you won’t miss your game, no matter what code. True, on the one hand you pay a little more, but on the other, more comfortable options are provided here than by some other venues. Next time I have some spare cash, 3 Dragons Sports Bar and Restaurant, with its superb Aussie rib-eye with chips and gravy, may well be my chosen venue when my game’s on.
