Late in 2015 Jim’s Snackbar opened in Hoi An to universal acclaim. Immediately, the expat grapevine buzzed with rumors that the best burgers and hot dogs in the world had arrived on our doorstep. We were gobsmacked. Along with cheap, half-decent wine, Jim was offering gourmet quality western food, like medium-rare burgers with blue cheese, in the $2-4 range.
Soon exotic options like ostrich and crocodile burgers were added to the Australian beef and New Zealand lamb patties already on offer; all blended with Jim’s own secret herb and spice mixes. Meanwhile, standard hot-dog-style frankfurts were augmented by hefty Polish beef sausages and chicken and seafood in various forms. There’s a Vegetarian Tikka burger and salads too and everything’s accompanied by an incredible range of sauces.
Jim’s is no ordinary snackbar, although full of class it is literally a hole in the wall that struggles to accommodate more than 6 diners at a time. I drove past it twice before I found it the first time. Jim’s food is high quality at everyman’s prices with customers using their motorbikes stretching down the road for extra seating on occasion. It’s only a matter of time before Jim is forced into a much larger venue … watch this space.
At Jim’s Snackbar the burgers aren’t overly large, so if you’re really hungry you might want two. One and a half’s about right for me so take a mate and explore the menu!
