Old Town

Before & Now $$

Before & Now is a little cheaper than some of the other venues in the Old Town — thick crusted pizza (115,000 vnd) and large bottles of Saigon (30,000 vnd). Upstairs, the restaurant has a splendid, people-watching aspect overlooking the intersection of Le Loi and Nguyen Thai Hoc and there’s an extensive international menu dominated by Italian cuisine. Later in the evening, the bar downstairs can get lively.

Dive Bar $$

Dive Bar, Bars in Hoi An, front bar 1

Informal cane furniture and pool table set the scene in Dive Bar‘s red-lit front bar. Here, there’s usually a solid group on stools around the bar and the mood is very relaxed. There’s an al fresco Caribbean-style bar out the back and in the center of this old Hoi An house there are lounges and big cushions where there’s more intimate lighting. The official home of Cham Island divers, a well-chosen, cruisey playlist keeps Dive Bar’s mood buoyant.

Guitar Hawaii $$

Music lovers and musicians alike looking for a relaxing live music experience near Hoi An’s Old Town will find a home for the evening at Guitar Hawaii. From brooding Vietnamese love ballads to Western classics like The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’ and Carlos Santana’s ‘Black Magic Woman’, there is something for everyone at Guitar Hawaii. The respectful crowd is primarily Vietnamese (many of whom are experienced performers themselves) with a handful of Western patrons who flow in and out throughout the evening.

The Hoianian - Wine Bar & Restaurant $$-$$$

The Hoianian - Wine Bar & Restaurant. Quick Guide to Bars in Hoi An. Scattered Bottles

In mid-2017 Lantern Town restaurateur, Khiem Vu, opened the exciting The Hoianian- Wine bar & Restaurant to plenty of local acclaim. Up till then only White Marble Restaurant & Wine Bar had marketed itself as a wine bar and having another option has had wine lovers rejoicing ever since. The Hoianian is chic, the imported wine selection vast and the highly rated fusion and modern Vietnamese cuisine justly acclaimed. There’s tons of room on two levels with a spacious veranda upstairs as well and it’s equally appropriate for intimate couples, large groups and anything in between.

Hoi An Sports Bar $$

One of  the cheapest and most centrally-located multiple-screen sport bars in Hoi An, with a fine array of icy cold beers and special offers. In between big games or motor sports or fights there’s a wooden, old-fashioned bar with plenty of elbow room where you can chew the fat and solve the world’s problems with your neighbor. Multiple fans make a cool, airy retreat from Hoi An’s enervating heat. The great pub-grub menu at Hoi An Sports Bar that benefits greatly from owners Gordon and Michele’s sister business and bakery, Dingo Deli, lists a very fresh range – from gourmet Aussie pies and sausage rolls to tacos and burgers.

Q Bar $$$

Q Bar. Bars in Hoi An. Cocktail

The Q Bar is the classiest bar in Hoi An’s Old Town. It’s a blend of two worlds with its contemporary Western chic housed in a beautifully preserved, traditional Hoi An Chinese house. Deep red wall lights dominate a low-lit scene that could be in Sydney, New York or London but pricing is top-end too. A great vibe is set by a superbly chosen playlist of chill-out lounge, funk and electronica. The Q bar is a great place if you’re cashed-up or if you want to get away from the hoi poloi.

Tap House Hoi An $$

True to its name, Tap House Hoi An specializes in local brews and craft beers, featuring 12 at a time in rotation from Vietnamese suppliers. Think Pasteur Street and Heart of Darkness to name a couple … but there’s good coffee too and it’s a nifty breakfast option as well. The beers and wines are well complemented by deli-style tucker like ploughman’s lunches, cheese platters, foot-long ham and cheese baguettes and smoked salmon with cream cheese on toast. A must for all who take their beer seriously.

White Marble Restaurant and Wine Bar, Hoi An’s first fully-fledged wine bar, is a popular meeting place for expats and tourists. It has a well-appointed, upstairs restaurant, a very comprehensive wine selection and an eclectic tapas menu but, best of all, it’s a voyeur’s heaven with great vantage points of the passing throng in Le Loi Street! The wine selection, including 13 sold by the glass, is extensive.

Moe's Tavern $$

Moe's Tavern Bar. Bars in Hoi An

A chill-out reggae/ska bar that’s a good spot during the day for lunch as well as for happy-hour evening cocktails, Moe’s Tavern is an unlikely mashup of Bob Marley and Homer Simpson. Trying to attract both the general market and the more discerning backpacker crowd the food’s inexpensive and not too bad and the spirits are the real McCoy, unlike many nearby competitors. There’s a dedicated pool room upstairs and various happy hours to keep you on your toes. Moe’s Tavern has a cruisey feel that makes you want to hang awhile. If you hit the right night it could be party time.

Tiger Tiger $$

Tiger Tiger aka King Tiger Tiger, is the backpackers’ bar of choice. It’s invariably packed while other bars nearby sit abandoned and forlorn. Why? Once you get past the al fresco setting by the street you’re in a full-on dance club that plays music the under-30s really want to hear and move to. Here a DJ rules like a Roman Emperor from an elevated platform and there’s a constant throng of young punters gyrating en masse below. Think super dark with fog machines swirling away amidst the beats and a light show of deep reds and blues. Spirits are cheap but very low quality permitting extended happy hour. Sentiment is fiercely divided on review sites.

Driftwood Café $$

Vegetarian Pizza, Driftwood Cafe, An Bang Beach, Hoi An

At Driftwood Café the wood fire pizzas are sensational but more and more those finding themselves at An Bang’s northern end are dropping in for some of the best chilled beer in town. The perfect stop-over after a day at the beach, visitors and residents of An Bang Beach are the lucky recipients of this keenly-priced eatery cum beer garden that’s the brainchild of Simon Connon and his wife, Huong.

H'Mong Sisters (Restaurant) $$-$$$

With a strong French, Iberian, and Moroccan influence, H’Mong Sisters Restaurant serves quality food but it’s also a chic place for a sundowner. Owned and managed by Benjamin Boudard and his wife, Thuong it’s rightly famed for its seafood and specialties like Australian Black Angus Beef. But more and more people just drop in for a beer or wine with the nearby beach a constantly soothing vista and the drink prices competitive.

La Plage $$

Described as ‘the Cheers of Hoi An’, La Plage is more of a bar than a restaurant. Located at the southern end of the beachside lane, La Plage offers patrons a pub-like atmosphere by the beach that doubles as a restaurant serving Vietnamese and French dishes. In the evenings, it cranks up a great play list and the pub vibe begins. Sometimes a mob gathers, sometimes it’s quiet — but chances are you will enjoy yourself either way.

Play a round of boules while sipping on an alcoholic slushie after a dip in the ocean. What more could want from a day out? Open since mid-2017, Salt Pub & Restaurant has boules, deck chairs, cabanas and beach out back and inside there’s cruisey music, major sporting events, plenty of drink options and an ever-present, cooling breeze. It’s a great setting for breakfast, lunch or dinner – servings are generous and the kitchen’s top-notch. Live music every Friday and there are plans afoot to extend evening activities. Soul Beach $$

Soul Beach, An Bang Beach, day, external

Soul Beach (Hon Bien) offers a relaxed atmosphere, a bevy of cocktails, and a live music experience akin to that of its sister business, Soul Kitchen. While the more crowded Soul Kitchen looks after the end of the week musically, Soul Beach has live performance or DJs Mondays and Wednesdays in a more chilled setting away from the hoi polloi. The kitchen is reasonably priced and the beach has more elbow room than the more established northern end. Be sure to check the Hoi An Now events calendar for their music program.

Other Bars

The Art Space, It's A Bar... $$$

CLOSED FOR RENOVATION TILL JUNE 2018. The Art Space, It’s A Bar …’ doubles as quality gastropub and a brilliant gallery of local artists (curated by Bridget March from March Gallery). It’s an upmarket bar too with Cuban cigars, unique craft beers from Saigon as well as Sapporo, San Miguel and Tiger on tap.  The top-end menu – eg grilled oysters with kimchi, bacon and spring onion – will soon be augmented with a trattoria set-up complete with pizza oven on the superb shady terrace. Doubtless, this bar’s intriguing schizophrenia is going to be most evident when big-match sporting events bust in on the arty serenity that mostly prevails.

3 Dragons Sports Gastropub $$-$$$

3 Dragons, external back, Hoi An_opt

Proudly the first dedicated sports bar in Hoi An – with an unashamed Australasian bias – 3 Dragons Sports Gastropub kicked off with a bang and has continued to improve its services and facilities for the comfort of patrons. With icy cold beer and gourmet burgers it’s a home away from home for many expats and, while its not the cheapest option in town, it takes the prize when it comes to atmosphere for the big events as it has the most comfortable and diverse viewing facilities. Away from the hurly-burly there’s a quiet, al fresco setting out back by the river as well where you can get away from it all with a superb Aussie rib-eye with chips and gravy.

The Happy Buffalo $$

After opening mid-2017 The Happy Buffalo has developed something of a cult following, especially for sundowners as it’s a brilliant spot to watch sunsets over nearby waterways and paddies. It nestles restfully way down Cua Dai Road, at the beach end, by the big rice field that stretches all the way to Tra Que, keeping Paddy’s Hostel & Bar company. Welcoming hosts Lindsay and Evan really know how to make cocktails and the beer is icy cold. Cheap tapas style snacks complete the picture for this aptly named new bar.

The Hill Station $$ - $$$

The Hill Station. Bar/restaurant Hoi An. Deli Hoi An, Hoi An

This franchise kicked off in Sapa and then spread to Hanoi and Hoi An. It’s a deli ostensibly in tribute to the French Hill Station cuisine that developed in remote parts of Vietnam during the colonial period. In Hoi An it has also become a place to hang in the afternoon and evening – just as the original Hill Stationers did 100 or so years ago – with wine, cheese and cold cuts. The wine list is extensive, including options by the glass. There are craft beers as well and popular homemade concoctions including the intriguing green chili infused riced wine. Hill Station‘s setting is magnificent in a beautiful old Hoi An shophouse.

The Kebab Shack $

Kebab Shack, Hoi An, Tim and Ly An

Long established as the best British short-order joint in Hoi An – or ‘greasy spoon’ as some would have it – The Kebab Shack has also morphed into a convivial watering hole by default. You won’t find lounges here or atmospheric electronica but you will find super cold beer or cider (including some imported options) and two of Hoi An’s most convivial hosts in Tim and Ly Anh. Indeed, Kebab Shack often holds punters long after they’ve eaten for ‘a few more’ and attracts others who have no intention of eating at all simply because it is so welcoming.

K'Noy $

A super chilled spot tucked away on Cam Nam Island, K’Noy is the place to spend a long evening putting the world to rights over a beer, whiskey sour or a strong margarita. Their coffee and juice menu is delicious if you’re not on the harder stuff. Kitted out attractively with recycled materials, the decor includes repurposed gas cylinders, Singer sewing machines and low-slung pallets for chairs and tables, you’ll be beckoned in by a nostalgic playlist of classic rock. This is THE place for locals seeking a quieter drinking haunt off the tourist track, you’ll most likely find yourself becoming a regular.

One Love $$

One Love, Hoi An, patrons 3

Reggae bar, One Love, is Hoi An’s premier late-night venue for many. It’s a welcome chill spot for those who prefer to chew the fat over pool and Bob Marley rather than scream and rage, stomp across table tops or stagger in a trance at a dance club. Everyday prices after midnight are a bonus. A little away from the Old Town it can sometimes be quiet at One Love but usually it’s peppered with companionable good folk who intermingle and make for a fine time. There’s big screen football on every night (without the sound).

Paddy’s Hostel and Bar $$

With a breezy layout, welcoming atmosphere and pub fare that brings you home to Ireland, Paddy’s Hostel and Bar is a celebratory spot for all things Irish in a quiet corner of Hoi An. On the ground level Paddy’s boasts a large bar, imported ales, three LCD screens and a pool table. French doors open to a courtyard with outdoor seating and a swimming pool. Once known mainly as a sports bar the hostel is now the primary focus. Nem Restaurant has lots of positives including very cheap local beer and a view across the Thu Bon River to die for. As it’s both a superb al fresco spot for a sundowner with spectacular sunsets and a handy late-night option when the others are closing up it’s ahead of the pack. It’s also a Vietnamese restaurant offering traditional fare. Hoi An Now’s pick for Cam Nam Island.

The Filling Station Bar & Grill $$

The Filling Station Bar & Grill is a comfort food stop and welcoming bar with few equals in Hoi An. Think hot dogs dressed with chilli con carne and hamburgers like the “Heart Attack” that pile the egg, cheese and bacon on thick. There’s also a fantastic poutine that betrays the Canadian origins of the mother and son team at the helm. In this part of town bars are few and far between and the Filling Station has stepped into the breach. There’s an IPA beer and a blonde on tap and a good range of spirits and wine. Events almost every night of the week like pool comps, open mic, Ladies’ Nights and craft nights keep it lively (see our events calendar).

At The T Room Gin Bar the low-level contemporary chill music, the luxuriant seating and the garden surrounding the grand Ancient Tea Room combine perfectly as a place to chill. Genial host, Kate Gerrard, started infusing gins as a hobby in early 2016 and there’s an incredible 25 different gins plus beer and wine on offer. Some of her most popular ginfusions include: Fennel, Cucumber & Black Pepper; Camomille; Rose & Cardamon; Longan & Lime and Vanilla & Pomello. The rose and lychee martini is not to be missed and remember, at The T Room Gin Bar measures are 50ml rather than the standard 30ml so prices are very competitive.
