Near the Central Market, close to Mia’s Café in Phan Boi Chau, you’ll find ‘Five Senses Spa & Beauty’. Whilst it could do with a bit of a face-lift this hidden gem provides five star massages at one-star prices (if you get the right masseur!). ‘I don’t go anywhere else now because it’s so good’, effused my ex-pat friend. ‘They give me a 60-minute massage for 200 (thousand) dong because I’m a regular.’
Not expecting much for that price, but keen to try anything new, I happily trudged along on her next visit. Like it is when you watch a movie and know from the opening credits that it’s going to be good – so it was with Five Senses Spa.
While sitting on the open, airy veranda overlooking the street with green foliage surrounding me, the pampering and personal touches began. Cold bottle water and wrapped scented tissues to wash away the morning’s heat were quickly followed by a footbath of lemon grass and green tea sprinkled with fresh flowers, topped up with hot water to ensure maximum hedonism. There’s nothing like sitting on a verandah languorously watching the world go by as the scent of lemon grass curls around your nose and music dances mellifluously in the air to relieve tension.
Five Senses isn’t your swish, upmarket 5-star resort spa but there’s something quaint and really pleasant about it. High thatched ceilings, green plants and bamboo tiled flooring inter-sprinkled with white pebbles, reminded me of a hippy beach shack. The three massage areas are decorated with throws and flowers and the entire spa, though simple, adds up to a wonderful, happy, airy ambience.
Since my first visit over a year ago, this little gem has become very popular. This means that extra staff have had to be called in. They are not always experienced in massage so sadly, in recent times, the standard of massages has been patchy. But, it’s definitely worth a visit. Remember, prices are negotiable so agree on the price before you start.
