Hoi An

BUYING A CAR, MOTORBIKE, BICYCLE or ELECTRIC BIKE

Buying transport such as brand new motorbikes or cars in Hoi An is not an easy process. Unless you have the meditative patience of a Tibetan Monk (with a fetish for paperwork),  you are better off looking at second-hand vehicles. Once a vehicle has had an owner, it’s all relatively easy – unless it’s a car!

WHERE TO BUY CARS

Foreigners must meet the following criteria if they want to own a car in Vietnam

  • Are living and working in Vietnam
  • Possess a valid passport
  • Have a visa that is longer than three months
  • Have a valid work permit and a Vietnamese driver’s license

If you do not meet these criteria, you can get a trusted Vietnamese to purchase the car for you.

WHERE TO BUY MOTORBIKES

NOTE: Most people use a motorbike to get around. If you decide to do this, make sure you get a motorbike license and check your insurance requirements. If you have a motorbike accident you want to be sure that you are insured.

You can pick up motorbikes fairly easily. People frequently advertise the sale of a motorbike on the various Hoi An / Da Nang Face Book pages. Whilst you can buy a second-hand bike in Hoi An you are likely get a better price in Da Nang. If you decide to go through a dealer make sure you take a Vietnamese who knows about motorbikes with you.

Buying brand new motorbikes can be a total headache if you are a foreigner due to various restrictions.  It is far easier to buy a bike second-hand.  This is a straight forward  process of pay your money, receive the bike.
