Sivananda Yoga at Annen
Many people know Annen mainly for its restaurant that serves delicious Vegetarian food. But attached to the restaurant is also the Annen Yoga Studio, offering classes in English and Vietnamese.
Jyoti and her colleague teach purely Sivananda Yoga, a traditional form of yoga, and Annen is the only place in Hoi An offering this style.
What is Sivananda Yoga?
The practice goes back to Swami Sivananda’s teachings. It is based on the 5 Points of Yoga which include Proper Exercise, Proper Breathing, Proper Relaxation, Proper Food and Positive Thinking and Meditation.
Jyoti has been teaching the English Sivananda Yoga for almost 5 years now. She was trained at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in Dalat as well as in the US.
The 90-minute classes always follow the same structure. They start with a mantra sung beautifully by Jyoti, followed by 2 Pranayama exercises (breathing), a sequence of Asanas (physical exercices) and an extended relaxation.
One of the great features of Sivananda Yoga is that you get to rest in Shavasana (Corpse Pose) in between every Asana. The practice is very relaxing yet trains your whole body. For every posture Jyoti is offering modifications, which makes the class suitable for beginners as well as advanced yoga practitioners.
The yoga shala is small and cosy, fitting between 5 and 8 people, so make sure you sign up via Facebook to secure a spot. The upside is that every student gets enough attention and guidance from the teacher.
